Clare Overton

Finance Manager

While studying for my AS levels, I realised the university route wasn’t for me. I felt I’d be more motivated and ambitious in a real working environment, rather than in the classroom.

Apprenticeships weren’t talked about much at the time, so I’m grateful a careers advisor helped guide me towards that path.

When considering my options, Sanctuary stood out to me for its mission and social purpose - to build affordable homes and sustainable communities where people choose to live.

During my Accountancy apprenticeship I had opportunities to spend time in different teams, working on everything from invoices and supplier reconciliations to housing benefit payments and strategic reinvestment projects.

It was a fantastic way to build new skills, and I learned so much from my colleagues with more experience and their supportive mentoring.

Being part of Sanctuary’s apprenticeship programme gave me confidence, clarity, and a real sense of direction. It helped me recognise my strengths, build my ambitions, and understand what I’m truly capable of.

I also made some great friends among my fellow apprentices. In fact, I would say the highlight of my apprenticeship journey was all the incredible people I met along the way.

Everyone I worked with was genuinely supportive and played a big part in helping me grow into a stage of my career that I never imagined I could reach.

My apprenticeship led me to do my ACCA studies - the equivalent of a master’s degree – and set me on a great path to continue my career at Sanctuary.

I have now been with the organisation for 14 years, progressing to the role of Finance Manager in our Affordable Housing division. This is a job I really enjoy, as it has such a strong connection to our customers and keeping them safe.

I’ve continued to support apprenticeships since completing my own – managing and coaching the apprentices in our teams and helping them make the most of all the amazing opportunities that apprenticeships have to offer.

This also enables me to see just how much value apprenticeships bring to our organisation. They’re an opportunity to nurture ‘homegrown’ talent, and apprentices always bring different perspectives, new skills and curiosity to any team.

I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. Mine made my career and arguably changed my life.

I have achieved more than I ever thought possible, because one day I chose to be an apprentice.
