Sanctuary switches to green electricity

Sanctuary is switching to a new electricity tariff that will reduce its environmental impact and support the growth of renewable electricity supplies.

The move, which will reduce Sanctuary’s carbon footprint by around 30%, means that its offices, student accommodation sites and care homes are now entirely powered by renewable sources.

By switching from a ‘brown’ to a ‘green’ tariff with its existing supplier, Sanctuary will save up to 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The previous ‘brown’ tariff included a typical mix of electricity generated from coal or gas fired power stations - and only a small portion of renewable energy is from solar panels, wind turbines and hydroelectric plants.

The new ‘green’ tariff helps to increase the amount of green electricity generated in the National Grid, instead of reallocating the renewable supplies from others.
