How to Create a Screen-Free Space at Home

Phones, tablets and TVs are part of everyday life. They help us work, stay in touch and enjoy our free time. However, it can also be helpful to have a place at home where you can take a break from screens.

A screen-free space could be a quiet corner, a comfortable chair or a small area where you can read, relax or spend time with family. Here are some simple ways to create one in your new build home.

Choose the Right Place

Start by finding a calm area in your home. This could be a corner of the living room, part of a bedroom or a space near a window. A screen-free space does not need to take over a whole room. With planning, you can make one room work in several ways. For example, you can create a reading corner within a living room or spare bedroom.

Try to choose somewhere away from the main television or home office. A quieter area will make it easier to relax without being distracted by messages or noise. Natural light can also help the space feel bright and peaceful during the day.

Make the Space Comfortable

Your screen-free space should feel like somewhere you want to spend time. Add a comfortable chair, floor cushion or small sofa if you have enough room. Soft items can make the area feel warmer and more welcoming. You could add a cushion, blanket or rug in colours that help you feel calm.

You do not need to buy lots of new things. Adding a quiet corner is also a simple way to make your new build feel more like home as you settle in.

Add Activities You Enjoy

Think about what you would like to do when you are away from screens. You might want to read, draw, write, complete a puzzle or listen to music.

Keep a few useful items nearby so the space is easy to use. A small basket could hold books, magazines, notebooks or craft supplies. Families could also add board games or children’s books.

Try not to fill the area with too many things. A simple space can feel more restful and easier to keep tidy.

Keep Devices Out of Reach

It can be hard to switch off when your phone is sitting next to you. Leave devices in another room, place them in a drawer or create a basket where everyone can put their phones. You could also agree on screen-free times, such as during meals or for half an hour before bed.

Small changes can help you spend less time checking notifications. This way you can do this without making screens feel completely off-limits.

Create a Calmer Atmosphere

Lighting can make a big difference. During the evening, use a lamp rather than a bright main light. Warm, gentle lighting can help the space feel calmer.

Plants, family photos or simple artwork can also add personality. Choose a few items that make you feel happy rather than filling every wall or surface.

Make Time to Use It

Creating the space is only the first step. Try to use it regularly, even if you only have a few minutes. A screen-free area can give you somewhere to pause, clear your mind and enjoy a quieter moment.

In a busy home, having a simple place to switch off can make a real difference.
