Easy Ways to Keep Your New Build Hallway Tidy This Winter

Winter can be tough on your new build’s hallway. Wet coats, muddy shoes, umbrellas, and extra layers can quickly make the space feel crowded.

Your hallway is often the first part of your home you see, so keeping it tidy can make a big difference. The good news is that you do not need lots of storage or a major makeover. Here are some easy ways to keep your hallway calm and organised this winter.

Give Shoes a Proper Home

Shoes and boots can soon pile up by the front door. Try giving everyone in the household a set place to keep the pairs they use most often.

A shoe rack, basket or small storage bench can help keep footwear together and off the main walkway. If you’re feeling thrifty, you can make building a shoe rack one of your fun DIY projects, too!

It can also help to put away shoes that don’t fit the season. Sandals and other summer footwear do not need to take up useful hallway space during winter.

Keep Wet and Muddy Items Under Control

Winter weather often means bringing rain and mud indoors. A sturdy doormat can catch some of the dirt before it travels through your home. A small cloth or towel nearby is useful too, for wiping wet shoes or muddy paws.

If possible, let wet umbrellas and coats dry before putting them into closed storage. This can help keep your hallway feeling fresh and stop damp items from being forgotten in cupboards.

Make the Most of Hooks

Hooks are one of the easiest ways to add useful storage without taking up much floor space.

Use them for everyday coats, scarves, hats, or bags. If children use the hallway too, placing a few hooks lower down can make it easier for them to put their own things away.

Try not to overload them. Keeping only the coats you are wearing most often in the hallway can make the space look much neater.

Add a Basket for Winter Accessories

Hats, gloves, and scarves are useful on cold days, but they can easily end up scattered around the house.

A basket near the front door gives smaller winter items one simple place to live. You could give each person their own basket or use one for the whole household. This also makes it easier to find what you need when you are rushing out of the door.

Clear Away Everyday Clutter

Keys, post, bags, and other small items often gather in the hallway without you noticing. A small tray or bowl can keep keys together, while a basket or drawer can stop letters and paperwork from taking over nearby surfaces.

Take a minute every few days to clear anything that does not belong there. Small, regular tidy-ups are often easier than tackling a large pile later.

Create a New Build Hallway That Works for You

A tidy hallway does not need to be perfectly organised. It simply needs to make coming and going a little easier. Give everyday items a clear place, remove things you are not using and choose storage that suits the space you have.

A few simple changes can make your hallway easier to use and keep tidy all winter.
