When Vivienne moved into Jazz Court, her learning disability and epilepsy had affected her confidence to the extent that she found herself unable to complete a lot of tasks without support.
As she began to receive a care package from Sanctuary Supported Living’s on-site care team, she was supported with regular household tasks like laundry, cooking, and shopping. However, Vivienne was keen to be able to travel independently.
The team at Jazz Court started to encourage Viv to achieve this goal. They helped her apply for a bus pass which provides her with free travel into town and accompanied her on her first bus journeys to help her familiarise herself with the bus stops and route.
Once confident in her own skills and armed with a card that explains where she lives in case of need, Viv was able to make her first trip out on her own. She’s now a frequent, confident, and independent bus traveller and can not only complete her errands on her own, but even stop off for a coffee if she likes.
Due to her health conditions, travel by car is not an option for Vivienne. By supporting her to travel independently by bus, the team at Jazz Court have not only enabled her to become more independent and grow her confidence in her own skills but have also been able to reduce regular taxi journeys in favour of bus trips, making Viv’s travel more sustainable too.
